Why modern leadership now includes guarding your face, your voice, and your name from machines
The video looks perfect. The CEO’s face, voice and mannerisms all line up as she tells finance to wire funds to a “new partner”. Fifteen minutes later, millions are gone and so is the board’s confidence.
That is the new reality of generative AI fraud. Deepfakes let attackers copy not just a logo but the living parts of corporate identity: leadership voices, behaviours, even quirks. When that happens, the real casualty is trust, not just cash.
Cybercrime damages are projected to hit 10.5 trillion US dollars a year by 2025, with AI-enabled scams rising fast. One major security analysis attributes 95% of breaches to human factors, while another reports that 63% of organisations have already raised budgets to counter AI-related threats. Away from boardrooms, a Filipino singer recently found her voice cloned and used by AI influencers without consent, a grim preview of what happens when identity becomes a free raw material.
The evidence base behind this view can be grouped like this:
- Research-based statements: global cybercrime losses are projected in the tens of trillions of US dollars; most breaches track back to human behaviour; a growing share of organisations are investing more to handle AI-driven threats.
- Practice-based observations: attackers now impersonate executives on video calls, abuse social platforms, and target mid-sized firms whose controls lag their brand visibility.
- Interpretive hypotheses: CEOs who take explicit ownership of deepfake defense, and who hard-wire verification rituals, are more likely to preserve trust when the first synthetic scandal hits.
What often gets missed is that deepfake defense is not really about files or firewalls. It is about the story people believe when they see or hear “you”. Corporate identity and AI brand safety now sit at the heart of strategy, not on an IT roadmap.
Three behaviours define the CEO’s new mandate. First, identity stewardship: nominate a senior owner for voice, image and brand integrity, with authority across marketing, legal and security. Second, verification culture: make “trust but verify” a daily habit. No large payments on the basis of video or chat alone, no matter how authentic it feels. Third, human-first AI partnerships: work with providers that combine machine detection of subtle anomalies with real analysts, and insist on regular drills that include communications, not just containment.
Picture two CEOs hit by the same deepfake hoax. One has rehearsed the playbook, staff pause the request, the incident is contained, and a clear public statement restores confidence. The other scrambles in silence while the fake circulates and customers decide who to believe. The only real difference is preparation.
The evidence is still evolving and much of the insight here comes from frontline practice rather than decades of formal study, so leaders should treat these ideas as urgent experiments to run, not universal laws. The sooner CEOs treat deepfake defense as a core part of their corporate identity, the longer their brands will deserve the trust they are asking for.
